Ireland’s minister of finance Paschal Donohoe has announced that the government has temporarily halted the proposed doubling of betting tax from 1 to 2 per cent of turnover in order to further review of its impact. The move will be a relief for betting companies in Ireland.

There had been protests by the bookmakers about the sudden tax hike.

The proposed new tax system was to come into effect from 1 January 2019. However, Donohoe said the implementation of the new tax regime will be delayed a review of its potential impact review is completed. The Irish Bookmakers Association (IBA) has lobbied with a number of parliamentarians to propose alternative and more reasonable gambling tax arrangements as the long-running debate continues.
