Will Ferrell and the eSports competitions

Published

on

eSports

In a few words, video games competitions.

But look closer and you will find a huge universe, dedicated to those who just can’t get enough of ‘em. But wait, there’s MORE!

Ever since the year 2000, such competitions have been around and kept getting bigger and BIGGER. For example it was estimated that in 2013 more than 70 million people worldwide watched eSports.

Still don’t understand how big this is? OVER US$300 million of revenue in 2015 has been generated in the global eSports market, and could actually DOUBLE by the end of 2017. That’s a LOT of money coming from virtual games competitions.

But even though labeling video games as actual “sports” was a bit problematic at first, elements like “careful planning, precise timing, and skillful execution” of those who engaged in the gaming activity, were the perfect ingredients and reasons to add specific video game competitions in this area of sports. eSports

Games like: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Call of Duty. League of Legends, Dota 2, World of Tanks and even Starcraft got into the spotlight as the most popular games in the eSports industry. And the prizes? well..let’s take a look at what Wikipedia has to say about this. A recent example:

“As of 10 September 2016, Dota 2 has awarded approximately US$86 million in prize money within 632 registered tournaments, with 23 players winning over $1 million. League of Legends awarded approximately $30 million within 1749 registered tournaments, but in addition to the prize money, Riot Games provides salaries for players within their League of Legends Championship Series. “

Pretty awesome, right? So for those of you that saw nothing more than a collective game-play in these Competitions, think again. This industry is growing bigger and bigger by the day!

But wait! There’s more!

It’s not just about the competition, the game-play and the atmosphere.

A comedy movie about eSports will soon begin it’s production, staring one of the most well known comedy veterans – Will Ferrell. Nothing unusual about a guy like Will Ferrell getting into eSports competitions, right? Wrong.

Because in this world, of eSports, which is specifically dominated by teenagers, who have better and faster reflexes when it comes to making quick gaming decisions, comes Will Ferrell, who is also playing AGAINST them to get the Grand Prize (which is a consistent 6 digit number).

And even though other details have not been given at the moment, there’s always something good coming from Legendary (Warcraft movie for example). The project, which is only beginning to come to life, will probably be as good as the rest of the movies starting Will Ferrell. There’s a huge number of fans out there that have never been disappointed, neither by Legendary or Will Ferrell.

It’s not the first sports comedy Will Ferrell is staring, but it’s likely that this movie will bring things to a whole new comedy level. Just imagining Will Ferrell participating, for example, into a Dota 2 tournament; or Starcraft 2, surrounded by teenagers, competing for the same million-dollar prize. That could be enough for some to start laughing.

Let’s just hope it won’t take long before we start laughing for good!

Will, makes us laugh like you always did!
