Polish police shuts down illegal gambling parlours

Polish police officers shut down three illegal gambling parlours in the Mazowieckie region, as an ongoing effort against an organised crime ring.

SIM cards, cash, telephones and fifteen poker machines were also confiscated by the authorities.
A 50-year-old Polish woman and a 59-year-old Ukrainian woman were detained.
Operating a poker machine illegally carries a fine of up to 100,000 Polish zloty (23,000 EUR). Police have identified about 50 suspects in the ongoing investigation.

Some of them face charges of being involved in organised crime, money laundering, and illegal bookmaking. Poland prohibited unlicensed slot machines in 2009 following a gambling scandal – involving the lobbying of top officials for gambling companies – which rocked the then-government and led to several resignations, according to Polish news website PolandinEnglish.pl.
