Facebook makes a great step, test a feature that will allow users to pick top news feeds from pages and friends

Test for some mobile users gives them the option to override the algorithm to make sure they see posts from their favorite people and Facebook Pages.

The team at Facebook is experimenting with a News Feed algorithm override. It’s currently in testing mode and it’s believed to be a feature that allows people to select friends and pages whose posts they don’t want to miss.

This way posts from friends and pages are given priority and will appear on top of a person’s News Feed. Pretty great if you are following the posts of your friends.

The test is already showing up for some mobile users who are served a box with an animated puppy and a “See more of what you love” prompt.

Tapping through leads to a new screen which is displaying friends and pages with whom that certain person has connected. Posts from selected pages and people will be prioritized in the News Feed, as the dialog box states: “Their posts will appear at the top of your News Feed so you’ll never miss them.”

At the full roll out of this feature,  this is believed to be a significant departure for Facebook, which typically serves News Feed content based on behavioral signals rather than expressed preferences. In other words, Facebook usually puts more stock in what people actually interact with rather than what they say they want.

Way to go Facebook, now we would finally filter the unwanted posts, but what will the marketers do and what will the ads be served like?

PC users can use this feature and pick the friends or pages to follow by using the steps described in the Facebook Help Center.
