Tim Miller set as keynote and chair for Regulating the Game 2027 in Sydney

Regulating the Game has confirmed Tim Miller, former Executive Director of the UK Gambling Commission, as a keynote speaker for its 2027 conference, running 8–10 March 2027 at the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth. Miller will also serve as a Conference Chair for one day of the program and join the independent judging panel for the 2027 RTG Global Awards.

The event organiser also confirmed additional 2027 speakers: Daniel Tan, Chief Executive of Singapore’s Gambling Regulatory Authority; Paul James, Secretary for Internal Affairs and Chief Executive of New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs Te Tari Taiwhenua; Brendan Thomas, Chief Executive Officer of AUSTRAC; and Carolyn Lidgerwood, Authority Member of the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

Miller’s keynote is titled “Turning tension to trust: reimagining the regulator/operator relationship” and will focus on the working relationship between regulators and licensees, with the illegal market positioned as a shared challenge. “The relationship between regulators and operators is too often adversarial, and both sides pay for it,” said Tim Miller, Founder and Managing Director of GamReg Consulting. “The growth of the illegal market gives us a common problem and, with it, a reason to work differently. I want to be candid about where the tension comes from, drawing on my own time as a regulator, and to set out a practical model for what a better relationship could look like and what it would take to get there.”

Paul Newson, Founder of Regulating the Game and Principal at Vanguard Overwatch, said Miller’s participation reflects the program’s focus on regulator-operator engagement and enforcement challenges. “His keynote goes to something the sector rarely addresses directly, which is how regulators and operators actually work with one another and what it costs when that relationship sours,” Newson said.

The Call for Speakers remains open until 11 December 2026. Nominations for the 2027 RTG Global Awards close on 21 December 2026, with finalists to be announced on 1 February 2027. The awards gala dinner is scheduled for 9 March 2027 at the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth.
