Ignition Poker index ranks Gold Coast as top poker trip for recreational players

Australia’s Gold Coast has been ranked the world’s leading poker destination for recreational players in a new “Recreational Poker Destination Scorecard” published by Ignition Poker. The index compares 10 tournament hubs and places the Gold Coast first overall with a total score of 7.14 out of 10, ahead of Manila (7.06) and Las Vegas (6.84).

Ignition Poker said the index is designed around the “95% of players who are recreational enthusiasts rather than professionals,” using five weighted categories: tournament accessibility (24%), lifestyle and infrastructure (24%), accommodation value (19%), trip cost (19%) and climate comfort (14%). The study uses August 2026 as the benchmark month for tournament schedules, accommodation and trip-cost inputs, and evaluates climate during each destination’s headline festival window.

On tournament access, the Gold Coast led the field with 89 published events under $717 AUD ($500 USD) during August, scoring 10.0 for accessibility. Manila posted 67 events (7.5) and Las Vegas 55 (6.2). By contrast, the index assigns Macau and Monte Carlo zero for accessibility, citing “a complete absence of published low-stakes August schedules” and “zero sub-$717 AUD ($500 USD) events.”

Cost and weather also drove the Gold Coast’s overall result. For a standardised five-day trip from Australia in August 2026, Ignition Poker calculated a $2,245 AUD ($1,565 USD) baseline for the Gold Coast, second only to Manila at $1,585 AUD ($1,105 USD). The Gold Coast also topped the climate category with an 8.2 score, based on an average 22.1°C in August and 54.8mm precipitation during the APL Million period.

Traditional premium destinations scored poorly on affordability in the same framework. Monte Carlo finished last overall (1.25/10), with the study citing $1,219 AUD ($850 USD) average nightly hotel rates for August 2026 and a $9,343 AUD ($6,514 USD) five-day trip baseline from Australia. Las Vegas, while third overall, was “weighed down by extreme summer heat,” with the index listing a 37.4°C maximum average temperature during the WSOP window.
