Inside Gaming Corps R&D: Innovation, Automation, and Beyond Slots
In an industry that never sits still, staying ahead requires a fine balance between technical precision and bold creative risk. At Gaming Corps, that drive for innovation is led by Head of R&D Matthew Scicluna, who oversees everything from proprietary engine development to non-traditional game formats like Marbles. In this Q&A, Scicluna breaks down how the studio leverages internal automation, explores AI-driven workflows, and pushes beyond traditional slot mechanics to craft memorable, high-performing player experiences.
What does your role as Head of R&D at Gaming Corps involve?
My job is a mix of innovation, technology, and helping the team turn ideas into great games.
I help create new game concepts and mechanics, explore opportunities and work with the team to bring those ideas to life.
A big part of my role is improving how we build and maintain games through our internal engines, tools, and automation systems.
These improvements allow us to create and support a large number of games with a focused team while spending more time on creativity, gameplay, and delivering high-quality experiences for players.
What inspires your team when developing new games and mechanics?
It comes down to creativity and quality. We always challenge ourselves to create games that feel unique rather than simply following existing trends.
Games like our Smash4Cash series, X-MY-WAY™ and Marbles show our approach of creating new experiences and mechanics for players.
At the same time, we focus heavily on execution, from art and animations to how each mechanic feels during gameplay.
Our technology, engines, and tools allow us to experiment faster and bring ambitious ideas to life while maintaining the quality we expect from our games.
How do you stay ahead of player trends and industry innovation?
It’s really important to keep one step ahead of trends and new developments, because ours is an industry that never sits still.
So we keep on top of things by combining an understanding of player behaviour, industry trends, and continuous experimentation.
We look at what players enjoy and explore how we can create new experiences around those expectations.
We also evolve our existing games by creating alternative versions for events, special occasions, and casino partners, allowing players to experience familiar games in fresh ways.
Our internal technology plays a big role, as it allows us to iterate quickly, test ideas, and experiment with new mechanics without being limited by external tools.
What makes a Gaming Corps game stand out from the competition?
It comes down to our focus on innovation and creativity.
We don’t want to simply create another version of something that already exists. Instead, we want to introduce new ideas and mechanics that give players something different.
I can offer games like Smash4Cash™, X-MY-WAY™, Marbles and 3 Pigs of Olympus as examples of this approach.
3 Pigs of Olympus became one of our best-performing games and introduced our unique three-pot mechanic, adding a new layer of excitement and interaction.
We also focus heavily on execution. Great mechanics need to be supported by great art, animations, sound, and overall game feel.
When we combine that with our internal technology and tools, we can create memorable experiences while maintaining high quality.
What’s been the most rewarding project you’ve worked on so far?
Marbles has definitely been the project I’ve got the most out of.
There were many question marks surrounding it right from the beginning, because we were building something completely new.
For a start, it’s not a traditional slot.
Marbles is a real-time game streamed to players, meaning we were working with new technology and challenges around streaming, performance, and creating a smooth player experience.
The project required a lot of experimentation, learning, and teamwork.
Seeing it evolve from an ambitious idea into a finished product was incredibly rewarding and showed what we can achieve when we take risks and explore new technologies.
How do you balance creativity with commercial success?
I don’t think creativity and commercial success are opposites; they should complement each other.
We always aim to create unique experiences for players while ensuring the games are engaging and have strong market potential.
We work closely throughout the development process across product, design, development, and commercial teams to refine ideas and create games players will enjoy.
Our internal engines and tools also allow us to prototype faster, test ideas, and take creative risks while keeping development efficient.
Success ultimately comes from finding the right balance between innovation, quality, and player enjoyment.
What emerging technology are you most excited about for game development?
AI is definitely the most exciting technology around today.
It has the potential to improve how we create games, not by replacing creativity, but by helping teams work faster and focus on what matters most.
AI can help with areas like content creation, testing, workflows, and automating repetitive tasks, allowing developers and artists to spend more time creating unique experiences.
Combined with our own technology and processes, AI will become a powerful tool that helps us experiment faster, iterate more, and bring new ideas to life.
What’s next for Gaming Corps’ R&D team, and what should the industry be watching out for?
The focus for Gaming Corps’ R&D team is to continue pushing the boundaries of what players expect from casino games.
We want to keep exploring new mechanics, new experiences, and ideas that stand out rather than simply following existing trends.
We’ll continue investing in our internal technology, engines, and tools, with AI becoming an important part of improving and automating our processes. This will help us reduce repetitive work, improve workflows, and allow the team to focus more on creativity and innovation.
Projects like Marbles show that there is still a lot of room to explore beyond traditional formats, and we want to continue creating experiences that surprise players and push the industry forward.
