Taiwan government is planning to amend its existing regulations to criminalise online gambling. The government says that online gambling is behind many “social and family problems” in the country.

The ministry announced that the amendment to Articles 266 and 270 of Taiwan’s Criminal Code will “add criminal liability for gambling with the use of telecommunications equipment, electronic communications, the internet or other similar means.”

In recent years, online gambling has gained popularity in Taiwan. In its statement, explaining the need for an amendment, the ministry said that “In the long run, players may only want to make money by gambling, so they will not contribute to society and will corrupt the social atmosphere.”

Taiwan does not have any specific rules on online gambling. So, the government has introduced the amendment to restrict locals from accessing gambling products online.
