4-10 NIGC Releases its Financial Report for 2018Reading Time: 1 minute

The National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) has released its financial report for the year 2018. The gross gaming revenue (GGR) from the fiscal year 2018 totalled US$33.7 billion, represents a 4.1% increase over the previous fiscal year.

NIGC said that all of its administrative regions experienced positive revenue growth in fiscal 2018. The Portland Region featured the highest growth with an 8.2% increase and the Oklahoma City region registered a 7.3% growth.

“These numbers reaffirm the industry’s health as a stable economic driver for Indian Country,” NIGC Vice Chair Kathryn Isom-Clause said.

“The annual GGR tells a positive story about Indian gaming’s economic success and the industry’s ongoing contribution to a strong economy. It also tells the story of how collaboration among tribes, industry and the regulatory communities can build a strong reputation for reliability and integrity in the GGR calculation,” Commissioner Simermeyer said.

Gaming Regulators Seek Ban on Steve Wynn from Nevada Casino Industry

3-10 Gaming Regulators Seek Ban on Steve Wynn from Nevada Casino IndustryReading Time: 1 minute

Nevada gambling regulators have filed a complaint against Steve Wynn, saying that the casino magnate’s alleged sexual misconduct has damaged the industry’s reputation in the state. The complaint lists multiple instances of sexual misconduct allegations that have been lodged against Wynn since January 2018.

The 23-page complaint, filed to the Nevada Gaming Commission, says Wynn is “unsuitable to be associated with a gaming enterprise or the gaming industry as a whole.” Wynn has denied all misconduct allegations against him.

The move follows a $20 million fine the commission levied on Wynn’s former company in February to settle allegations that former executives failed to investigate claims of sexual misconduct against Wynn by female employees. Gambling regulators in Massachusetts levied a $35 million fine on the company in April but allowed it to keep a casino license for a Boston-area resort.

An investigation by the Nevada gaming control board detailed allegations that Wynn paid hush money to multiple women who claimed he had pressured them into nonconsensual sexual relationships.

1-10 Mohegan Opens Office in Tomakomai, JapanReading Time: 1 minute

Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment has opened an office in Tomakomai, Japan. Mohegan plans to use the office both as a home base for its Japanese team and a showroom for Hokkaido residents to learn about IRs.

“At the Tomakomai Office, we plan to install not only the Mohegan company profile but also a book that summarizes Mohegan’s corporate philosophy and CSR and an IR vision book,” Mohegan said.

Mohegan recently revealed the first details of its Hokkaido IR concept, to be named INSPIRE Entertainment Resort Hokkaido and cost between US$3.5 billion and US$4.5 billion to build.

The INSPIRE name follows the theme adopted on Mohegan’s other international developments: INSPIRE Korea, set to be built in Incheon and INSPIRE Athens, a proposed IR concept in Greece.

The Hokkaido IR would include a unique museum celebrating the cultures of both the Mohegan Tribe in Connecticut and the indigenous Ainu people of Japan. To be located in a forested area of Tomakomai, it would also offer various outdoor activities for guests such as horse riding and cross-country skiing.
