Bulgaria’s Ministry of Finance has announced Alexander Georgiev, who previously acted as Deputy Director of the National Tax Agency, as the head of the State Commission on Gambling (SCG). The appointment is signed by the Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov.
The former head, Maria Filipova, is appointed as the deputy chairman of the Financial Supervision Commission (FSC) and is now in charge of the Investment Activity Supervision Division.
In the beginning of 2018, Vladislav Goranov dismissed the chairman of the SCG, without specifying any specific motives. The dismissal of Ohnemir Mitev was due to media publications, which accused the commission of inaction against the aggressive advertising of gambling on national televisions. Later, the Ministry of Finance published a report according to which the gambling commission performs ineffective control over gambling industry. In February 2019, changes were made to the SCG rules.
