Gambling revenue surges in Britain

Gambling revenue surges in BritainReading Time: 1 minute

According to the latest report from the UK Gambling Commission, gambling revenue in the country has reached almost £14 Billion between the report period of October 2016 and September 2017. This represents a 0.7 per cent increase from that of the previous reported period. It shows that the gambling industry is thriving and it is making a significant contribution to the country’s economy as well.

The industry is estimated to have created 100,000 jobs through its 152 licensed casinos and over 8500 betting shops. The UKGC reports provide detailed data: 183,928 gaming machines and 33,648 B2 machines are present across the country, generating revenues of £2.8 billion and £1.8 billion, respectively. The gambling industry contributes generously to charity too: the National Lottery contributed £1.5 billion to charity from October 2016 to September 2017, while large society lotteries offered £251 million.

A great amount of that success can be traced back to the popularity of online casinos, betting, and bingo. Together they represent the remote gambling sector and make up 35 per cent of the market – a 1% increase from the year ending in March 2017.

Online casinos, which offer games like roulette, blackjack, and baccarat and allow gamblers to watch the dealer live via live streaming, generated a revenue of £4.9 billion for the period between October 2016 and September 2017.
