Korean police arrests five for illegal online gambling

The South Korean police have arrested five of its citizens from two houses in Bang Lamung district for allegedly hosting online gambling.

Deputy national police chief Chalermkiat Srivorakhan said Chan Jun and Donggeun Kim, both 31, were arrested at house number 62/7 on Soi Nong Mai Kaen in tambon Nong Prue.

Tae Yong Kim, 33, Jungwook Jin, 36, and Sangwoo Kim, 34, were caught at house in Garden Home housing estate near Pattaya. Police seised from them computers, software running online gambling websites and lists of gamblers’ information.

The first two suspects allegedly ran a sports betting website called Soulmate while the three other suspects allegedly operated the Coca Cola website.

Pol Gen Chalermkiat said hundreds of millions of won equivalent to about 300,000-400,000 baht were circulated through both websites monthly.

They were charged with illegally hosting gambling.

Meanwhile, police arrested 9420 Thai people on World Cup gambling charges, including about 8800 punters, and seised about 42 million baht in bets during the first 20 days of the tourney.

Deputy police spokesman Krisana Patanacharoen said on Wednesday that from June 14 to July 3 police detained 392 people for hosting gambling events, 8879 gamblers and 149 bookmakers’ agents.

The roundup included 79 online gambling hosts and 169 online gamblers.

Police also seised about 6 million baht involved in the gambling – 3.83 million baht in cash and 2.54 million baht in bank passbooks. Seised written betting orders totalled 36.03 million baht.
