Chinese police unearths illegal online gambling case
The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau has solved a major case involving illegal sophisticated online gambling.
The gambling network manipulated a national welfare lottery called “PK Shi” for short through organised gambling groups in WeChat, China’s most popular social network. The network also used gambling software to fix the odds in such a way as to ensure that most gamblers lost.
“The suspects usually raised the odds to attract more people to play the game, and would kick out anyone who won big prizes,” a police officer surnamed Qiao said, adding that a gambler who was in it for three months lost nearly 350,000 yuan (about 52,600 U.S. dollars).
A campaign covering 21 provincial regions and municipalities across the country was launched by the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) on May 17. As of May 30, a total of 61 gangs involved in the gambling were busted, with over 200 suspects arrested.
The bust was considered to have effectively cut the chain of the crime, and destroyed the illegal gambling network involving “PK Shi.”
The police warned the public that any gambling activity on online platforms such as WeChat is illegal, and those involved can receive criminal sanctions.
They also warned the public of illegal online football betting, given the FIFA World Cup is going on.
The MPS has been cracking down on cross-border online gambling crimes in recent years. Since the start of last year, Chinese police have solved over 7,000 criminal cases on cross-border online gambling, busted 3,100 criminal gangs, detained and frozen 11 billion yuan, and hunted down more than 270 underground gangs dealing with illicit monetary affairs.

Meridianbet’s Largest Shareholder Aleksandar Milovanovic Completes $500,000 Cash-to-Equity Conversion Under Post-Closing Agreement with Parent Company
Reading Time: < 1 minute
Aleksandar Milovanović, founder and largest shareholder of Meridianbet, has completed a $500,000 cash-to-equity conversion under the Post-Closing Cash Consideration Conversion Agreement, as specified in the Eighth Amendment to the Amended and Restated Sale and Purchase Agreement with the parent company, Golden Matrix Group (GMGI).
The Eight Amendment was signed on August 29, 2025 and entered into force on September 9, 2025. The underlying SPA was signed June 27, 2023, and the acquisition closed on April 9, 2024 (effective April 1, 2024).
The conversion was executed in five scheduled tranches from September 9 to September 26, 2025.
With the final tranche today, the full $500,000 conversion is complete as agreed. These issuances were made as restricted shares pursuant to the SPA terms and do not affect the overall economics of the post-closing consideration.
The completion of the scheduled tranches converts cash obligations into equity as outlined in the agreement, without changing the overall post-closing economic terms. This process manages cash flow timing and maintains consistency with the agreed-upon shareholder structure.
