Ralph Infante, a former mayor of the northeast Ohio city Niles, has appealed his conviction after the court found him guilty of two charges: running an illegal gambling house and accepting bribes in exchange for jobs.
The court sentences Infante last month for 10-year imprisonment. He has appealed the verdict and also asked for his release from prison; but the special prosecutor from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office has objected to releasing Infante.
Prosecutors say Infante received nearly $200,000 in unreported cash, income and gifts and ran an illegal gambling house in Girard.
Infante was Niles’ mayor for 24 years before losing the 2015 Democratic primary. Niles is roughly 70 miles (113 kilometres) southeast of Cleveland.
