Mississippi to discuss lottery plans

The committee that has been studying the possibility of bringing lottery to the state of Mississippi will gather in the upcoming weeks to discuss the initiative.

The body that was formed by the government to analyse lottery activity in close states is scheduled to meet for the last time on November 16 to discuss if it’s possible for Mississippi to offer a state lottery.

The first meeting was held in May and it was expected that a final reunion would take place in October with a final report in November, but it seems like the information will take a little longer to be released. Nevertheless, the information gathered by the nine member committee will be presented before the 2018 session stars in January to the Mississippi House. The report will only provide the information to house members instead of making a statement of whether Mississippi should allow lottery services or not.

Rep. Mac Huddleston, R-Pontotoc, one of two Northeast Mississippians appointed to the study committee by the speaker, said: ”I believe it will come up (during the 2018 session) one way or anothe. I don’t know how far it will get. I am sure someone will introduce a bill. I think it is gaining some favor,” Lottery Post quoted.

During the next meeting the members will hear from opposition groups as well as those who support a state lottery. The committee is also scheduled to hear the economic impact that it would have on the state.
