Interview with Fintan Costello, Managing Partner, Revenue Engineers and speaker at the Player Acquisition Strategies

With 3 weeks left until the iGaming Super Show 2016 opens its doors and sets the stage for a never seen before event with many surprises installed for attending affiliates.

The iGaming Super Show is unique in that it isn’t simply an exhibition and conference room. Instead as a delegate you will benefit from access to eight events co-located within the show.

Fintan will be speaking in “The rise of ad blocking and how it affects the igaming sector” session taking place on Thursday 9th June 2016 at 16:00 in conference room 3.

Fintan Costello is a internationally noted public speaker, trusted advisor, entrepreneur and marketing expert. Prior to joining Revenue Engineers, Fintan held the role of Senior Industry Head at Google and led the global Financial Trading and eGaming team. Before that he managed and led the Online Marketing departments for eGaming giants PokerStars and Paddy Power.

We have asked Fintan to give us on overview and a short preview of what’s ahead and what should delegates be looking for when attending his session. Below you will find the Q&A session we have conducted with him:

EEG: Hi Fintan, first, let me thank you for doing this interview and we are certain that your topic is expected by many of the delegates attending the Player Acquisition Strategies.

Ad blocking is alarming for publishers, because their business models have become overly reliant on these earning funnels. However it is only a small piece of a much larger puzzle about who controls news, information and access to the mobile web, and therefore all publishing, revenue and audience on mobile platforms. Are igaming executives paying enough attention to reduce their ads from being blocked by their users?

Fintan: Our experience would suggest not only are iGaming companies not doing anything to reduce their ads being blocked but they don’t even know what actual percentage of ads are being blocked

EEG: In your expert opinion, what is the best way to approach a visitor, or user, to disable their ad blocking plugins/software?

Fintan: Step one for a publisher is to install the Revenue Engineers plugin that allows publishers to quantify the number of users who actually have ad lockers installed. Then make a decision on what needs to be done to mitigate the impact of ad blockers on their site.

EEG: Could the rise of ad blockers cause other problems in the online gambling industry?

Fintan: The biggest  un-noticed impact is on affiliate link trackers which can also be blocked by ad blockers, this can cause issues for text links once the user clicks and not just display ads.

EEG: I’ve read online that some 25% of the internet users are already blocking ads, and this number keeps rising. What happens when ad blocking rises to 50%, which is a percentage where we are heading, unless some concrete action is taken to stop this disaster for digital ad sellers from happening?

Fintan: The advertising  budget and creative will shift from display ads to more native type advertising content which is harder to block.

EEG: As a closing question, is your session going to be fun and educative?

Fintan: Of course!

Player Acquisition Strategies 2016 will be held on the 9th June 2016 at the RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre in Amsterdam as part of the iGaming Super Show.
