Mykonos planning to hold referendum on casino

The Greek island is planning to hold a referendum against the creation of a casino industry in the territory.

Municipal authorities from Mykonos, the Greek island that is a major tourist destination, are collecting signatures to hold a referendum on the Cycladic resort island against the creation of a gambling facility.

After the proposal by Mayor Constantinos Koukas, he town council unanimously decided to launch a bid to oppose the government’s decision for the immediate licensing and operator of casino business in the territory, local media reported.

Last week, it was reported that the government was discussing the provision of gambling facilities in Mykonos, Santorini and Crete. The tabled draft bill establishes three new gaming licenses for those islands in Greece, whilst the six casinos in operation in the territory would be allowed to relocate.

The Greek Ministry of Finance is behind the push, as it is trying to open the existing Greek gambling market, which seems like a monopoly from certain points of view. The bill that also considers online gambling is seeking new regulations in the European country.

Although the draft bill is expected to be voted before Christmas, it is estimated that it would come into force on January 1, 2020. If the bill makes it through the government, it could translate into the relocation of Regency Casino Mont Parnes, in Athens, as well as other facilities such as the ones located in Thessaloniki, Rio, Loutraki, Florina, and Alexandroupolis.
